"What if we don't want to be the small sacrifice?"
Teachers are striking and everyone’s got a day off because of it. Except for five students, who are stuck in a classroom. Alone. With unfettered access to their teacher’s computer.
For this piece of political theatre, my design aimed to reflect the impact of continual cuts on schools, an important contributor to strike action in this sector. Taking inspiration from the shapes and form of the work of Piet Mondrian, I wanted to evoke a space that has been stripped back to its constituent parts. Colour played an important role in this piece and I worked with the lighting designer to enable the final moments of the piece, when the teacher returns, to feel significantly distinct from the rest.
